City of Fremantle

While we agree with Lonely Planet that Fremantle deserves to be one of the top 10 places to visit, the city is so much more than a tourist destination.
Conveniently 30 minutes by train from Perth, Fremantle or ‘Freo’ is Perth’s Old Town and gets its charm from the character heritage homes and Victorian and Edwardian buildings that line the streets.
Home to Western Australia’s biggest Port, it is a city that celebrates the outdoors with over 70 parks and reserves, not least The Esplanade at the city’s heart. You can also get back to nature- living close to the beautiful beaches and the stunning Swan River! With five beautiful beaches, Bather’s Beach, Fremantle’s very own inner-city oasis, is just a short walk from the Town Hall. Fremantle is also the gateway to Rottnest Island (Wadjemup), an island getaway just 25 minutes away by ferry.
Most eateries in Fremantle take advantage of the stunning seaside views offering al fresco dining, overlooking Fremantle Fishing Boat Harbour. Popular attractions that reflect the port city’s deep history include Fremantle’s Arts Centre, the WA Maritime Museum or the historic, heritage-listed building that houses Fremantle Markets, with over 100 years offering local wares and fresh produce.

Fremantle’s year-round program of music, theatre, visual art, food and cultural festivals complements its staple entertainment scene with live-music rooms, hipster bars, boutique hotels, bookshops and craft-beer breweries, Fremantle also boasts Western Australia’s largest concentration of independent artist studios.
Fremantle has a promising future with the renewal project of Walyalup Koort (formerly Kings Square) just completed.
